Gaining experience, gaining confidence: My apprenticeship journey

When I finished my A-Levels in 2018, the thought of entering the working world and gaining independence felt overwhelming. Most of my friends had secured their university offers, while I was still uncertain about my next steps.

After reflecting on my strengths, I realised that a role requiring strong organisational skills would be a great fit. I applied for jobs in my local area, but with no industry experience, I struggled to find opportunities. That’s when I discovered the world of apprenticeships, a path that would kick-start my career.

During my search, I applied for a Business Administration Apprenticeship. It seemed like the perfect opportunity. Shortly after, I headed to Westminster for my first interview at PLMR and I was then offered the role.

My first steps at PLMR

A month later, I started my first day at PLMR. My team were so warm and friendly, which instantly put me at ease. Colleagues from different departments took the time to introduce themselves and explain their roles, helping me gain a clearer understanding of the company.

As a Business Admin Apprentice, I learned about PLMR’s finances, policies, and the various sectors and services they offered. Meeting new people every day pushed me out of my comfort zone and gradually boosted my confidence.

My training with my apprenticeship provider each month also offered me the chance to meet other people who we also taking part in a similar apprenticeship and receive talks from industry leaders at companies such as Sony.

Discovering my passion for digital marketing

I had always been interested in social media and digital marketing, and my apprenticeship gave me the chance to explore this further. While I worked across multiple teams, I was given the opportunity to be seconded to the Digital Team which was extremely exciting. From building my first website to running social media campaigns, every experience was a learning opportunity.

After a year and a half, my apprenticeship ended, but my journey at PLMR continued and I officially joined the Digital Team!

Growth, lessons, and looking ahead

My apprenticeship didn’t just teach me workplace skills, it helped me grow as a person. The business knowledge I gained during my course still influences my work today, and the experiences from my initial role continue to shape my approach in the Digital Team.

During my time here, I have been given the opportunity to take part in training sessions that have accelerated my career. I have been able to select training sessions that are in line with the areas I want to upskill in from a technical and personal development perspective. PLMR also have a programme of “LEARN and LEAD” sessions that are facilitated by PLMR consultants or external speakers, that have equipped me with further knowledge to support my career journey.

I was also very lucky to have mentors along the way from Finance to Digital Marketing specialists – who were always on hand to support and advise me
Choosing the apprenticeship route allowed me to grow within the workplace, gaining hands-on experience in a professional setting and receiving guidance from incredible individuals who have worked within their field for years. My apprenticeship wasn’t just about shadowing a colleague, I was given the independence to take responsibility and build a foundation for my career.

Fast forward seven years, and I’ve gone from a Business Admin Apprentice to a Digital Account Manager. The lessons, experience, and knowledge I’ve gained along the way have been invaluable, and I know they will stay with me for the rest of my career.

For anyone considering an apprenticeship, go for it! It’s an incredible way to gain real-world experience, build confidence, and discover your true strengths.
