James van der Graaf

Associate Director

James is an Associate Director in the Energy and Sustainability team, where he provides public affairs, strategic communications and corporate affairs advice to clients.
James has worked with a diverse range of organisations – from high-profile listed companies to new entrant challengers – across the energy, infrastructure, transport, and financial services sectors.
He has designed and implemented national public affairs and communication campaigns on issues such as electricity market reform, post-Brexit emissions trading arrangements and securing consent for a solar farm in Wales.
With deep expertise in complex policy issues, James helps clients navigate highly regulated markets, with a focus on the energy policy and regulatory landscape in the UK. He also brings experience working with major global institutional investors in the renewables sector.
In addition to this, James supports businesses in developing their sustainability strategies and has provided public affairs and communications support for global M&A activity.
James is a member of the PRCA NextGen Public Affairs Board, a group dedicated to fostering growth, innovation, and best practices within the public affairs sector.
Prior to joining PLMR, James was a Director at H/Advisors Cicero and worked in an external communications role at GFG Alliance, an international industrial and energy group. In this role, he focused on developing the group’s steel, aluminium and renewable energy portfolios in the UK. James then worked in the group’s Brussels office, coordinating engagement with European-wide trade, industry and business bodies.
