The Situation

PLMR were appointed to undertake a pre-application consultation exercise for a project in Birmingham’s Digbeth Quarter.

The proposals were for the delivery of over 546 new homes and 710 student beds on a prominent brownfield site. A landmark 37-storey building was also included, acting as a new gateway into the city centre.

What we did

As part of our work it was important to clearly present how the new proposed development would optimise the potential of the location and deliver real value for the area.

Alongside easing needs for housing and student accommodation in the city, PLMR emphasised the link that would be created to Digbeth’s strengths as a centre for culture and creativity through a dynamic range of amenities being delivered as part of the scheme.

It was also key to emphasise the sustainability aspects of the proposals, with new green areas, walkways, and enhanced biodiversity for the whole community to enjoy.

The local heritage of parts of site included within the plans also needed to be sensitively considered and addressed as part of the messaging.

PLMR presented the development’s potential through a consultation programme where we set up a website to clearly showcase the proposals, distributed leaflets and letters to local businesses and people, spoke to key stakeholders, and produced a press release which achieved widespread local and sectoral coverage.

The Result

As a result of our efforts, the application was unanimously approved at planning committee.
