The Situation

As part of their Untold Heartbreak campaign, the British Heart Foundation was lobbying the Government to introduce a clear cardiovascular strategy for England to support recovery from the pandemic. A major component of this campaign was to draft a cross-party letter to the Health Secretary, which was in need of signatures from leading MPs and Peers. PLMR was recruited to secure at least 50 signatures on a short deadline.

What we did

PLMR engaged in a targeted effort to secure signatures from all major political parties, focusing especially on those who had previously expressed support for the British Heart Foundation or cardiovascular issues.

PLMR drafted outreach emails explaining the campaign and personally followed up by phone to seek their signature. This involved liaising with Parliamentary staff, highlighting the positive aims of the campaign and the personal benefits of signing, as well as leveraging the signatures of some individuals to secure the support of their allies in Parliament.

The Result

PLMR successfully secured 52 signatures for the letter, above the original target, and it was sent to the Health Secretary right on schedule. These signatures came from a wide-range of high-profile figures across the political spectrum, including former Cabinet Ministers such as a former Health Secretary and a former Deputy Prime Minister, former Shadow Cabinet Ministers, the Leader of the Liberal Democrats, current Party Spokespeople, a Metro Mayor, and others. This work in turn helped the British Heart Foundation to identify Parliamentary champions for their campaigns going forward.

The letter was subsequently featured in the Daily Mail, and the British Heart Foundation’s campaign was covered widely in the Times, the Telegraph, the I, Sky News and a range of local outlets.

“PLMR was invaluable in engaging in a targeted effort to secure signatures from MPs and Peers on our cross-party letter to the Health Secretary. On a tight deadline, PLMR secured 52 signatures, which was above our original target. PLMR’s work has been very helpful in building and maintaining relationships with a number of key stakeholders which will be vital to our efforts going forward.”
