Essex County Council – Climate Focus Area (CFA)

We have delivered a range of PR and marketing support to Essex County Council’s Climate Focus Area, an initiative to accelerate climate action and showcase best practices in sustainable land stewardship.

The Situation

The Climate Focus Area (CFA) is a transformational project which aims to turn Essex countryside into nature areas and the remaining farmland into sustainable farming areas.

The CFA is a pilot for accelerated climate action, leading the way for the rest of the UK by showcasing best practices in sustainable land stewardship, in collaboration with local councils, charities, residents, landowners and businesses.

Our brief was to increase awareness of the Essex CFA through an impactful PR campaign aimed at partners, landowners and residents in the wider Essex community. The PR needed to showcase the CFA’s commitment to achieving net zero by 2050, and to inspire collaborative partnerships for those who could support the CFA to achieve its objectives.

What we did

We provided the CFA team with PR support for a series of workshops with parish councils in the CFA catchment area. This support ranged from sharing stories about the initiative to developing toolkits for each parish council.

As part of the pilot, the CFA has awarded environmental funding to local projects and landowners who are working towards the CFA objectives. We arranged interviews, videography briefings and developed stories to showcase the work of these local projects through a ‘CFA Advocates’ blog and news story series.

We later used digital marketing to promote a CFA webinar to a tailored audience of landowners and land managers interested in natural capital in the catchment area.

We identified that the key to achieving the pilot’s objectives would be to develop a partnership with Local Authorities in the area. This led to the development of a wider CFA Stakeholder Toolkit that could be shared with stakeholders we had identified through mapping.

The Result

As a result of PR support, coverage was achieved highlighting the work of the scheme in key regional media. The CFA also now have a catalogue of blogs and video content that is regularly shared on the wider Essex Climate Action Commission channels including social media, websites and newsletters.

Since the development of the CFA stakeholder toolkit, the CFA team has been able to develop a partnership with the North Essex Climate Partnership which will play a key role in getting more charities, residents, landowners and businesses involved in the climate initiative
