Mental health has become a central conversation in both personal and professional spheres, particularly as the fast-paced demands of modern life continue to rise. An important moment in the global calendar that provides us with an opportunity to reflect on mental health needs and challenges is World Mental Health Day. Marked annually on October 10th, World Mental Health Day also serves as a call to action for individuals, communities, and organisations to actively contribute to mental wellness.
In recognition of this day, many companies are adopting initiatives to foster mental health awareness and support. One such initiative is Tea & Talk, a simple yet impactful way of promoting open dialogue around mental health. Tea & Talk sessions provide a safe, comfortable environment for people to connect, share their experiences, and, most importantly, listen to one another.
PLMR prioritises good mental health among its team, and as co-chairs of PLMR’s Tea & Talk sessions we want to mark World Mental Health Day by highlighting the value of these types of company-wide initiatives, and the importance of recognising the powerful effect that human connection and conversation, can have on mental well-being.
Why Tea & Talk Matters
Tea & Talk is rooted in the idea that small, consistent efforts can have a lasting impact on mental health. The concept encourages people to take time out of their busy schedules to focus on meaningful discussions. Whether the conversations are focused on mental health directly or instead involve games and activities that boost morale and reduce stigma, the act of gathering together creates an environment where people can feel heard and supported.
The stigma that still surrounds mental health issues, particularly in professional environments, can prevent people from seeking the help they need. Tea & Talk sessions, however, help to break down these barriers by normalising discussions around mental well-being and creating a culture of openness and empathy. These conversations serve as an important reminder that we are not alone in our struggles, and that by talking about mental health, we create a supportive community.
In previous Tea & Talk sessions, we have covered topics such as managing stress, the importance of work-life balance, and how to recognise burnout. We have also shared helpful tips on self-care, mindfulness techniques and on how we can support colleagues facing mental health challenges. These sessions have been invaluable to promoting a healthier and more supportive workplace culture.
Supporting Mental Health Beyond World Mental Health Day
While World Mental Health Day serves as an important milestone to draw attention to global mental health issues, it’s important to ensure that conversations around mental health go beyond just one day.
At PLMR, our sports teams and monthly book club ensure that a sense of community is fostered beyond our Tea & Talk sessions. From one-to-one catch ups and affinity groups to mental health first aiders and private healthcare, there are several ways that colleagues are provided with a safe space to share how they are feeling.
As we mark World Mental Health Day, it is important to recognise that mental health requires ongoing attention, care, and support. At PLMR, our Tea & Talk sessions, as well as our other initiatives, offer a valuable way to encourage regular, meaningful conversations. These discussions can range from light-hearted topics to more serious conversations about mental health, but every interaction contributes to a larger culture of support and care. So, grab a cup of tea and start a conversation—because when it comes to mental health, every talk matters.
