PLMR Group Media Snapshot: July 2024

July was a remarkable month for the UK as we saw the swearing-in of a new government after the Labour Party won the General Election. The nation also tuned in for the end of the Euros and the start of the Paris Olympics 2024, with schools breaking up for the summer holidays.

PLMR Group also had a busy month as we kicked off our post-election insights series with The Times’ Chief Political Correspondent, Aubrey Allegretti. We were then joined by former Cabinet Minister, the Rt Hon Michael Gove, who shared his insights on what the first hundred days of the Labour Government could look like. The day after the King’s Speech, Lord Knight also joined us to share his own experience of previous Queen’s Speeches and gave an analysis of the confirmed Bills. To end the month, we were joined by Denis Campbell, Health Policy Editor at The Guardian and The Observer, who provided an overview of the challenges faced by the NHS and shared his thoughts on what the future of health policy in the UK could look like.

Matching this array of events, we also achieved a variety of international, national, broadcast, trade and regional coverage for our clients. We supported organisations to develop strong stories that achieve cut-through during the politically saturated news agenda, helping disseminate their key messages at an opportune time. Read on to find out more about some of our media highlights for July 2024!

The Guardian: Hippos might fly - UK research discovered animal can get airborne

Client: Royal Veterinary College

Sector: Health Sciences and Research, Higher Education

PLMR supports the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) to promote its clinical excellence, internationally recognised teaching and world-leading research. In July, one of the research stories we supported with revealed that the fastest-moving hippos become airborne for substantial periods of time. This was the first time this movement had been discovered, with the findings helping improve scientific understanding of how the size of large animals influences their movement on land, helping vets diagnose or monitor hippos that have problems moving or are experiencing lameness.

PLMR worked with the lead academic and RVC’s external relations team to develop a compelling story that captured the key findings of this research, before disseminating it to Tier 1 UK and international press and trade media. Despite a crowded media landscape during the General Election results, the story garnered significant interest with more than 900 pieces of coverage. This included interviews with The Guardian, CNN, Germany’s Die Zeit, EuroNews and various BBC streams, including BBC Radio 4, international BBC News and BBC World Service.

Client: Lime Solicitors

Sector: Legal, Contentious Probate

PLMR supported the Contentious Probate practice of Lime Solicitors to secure national coverage with a polling press release in This is Money and Mail Online

The coverage offered a valuable platform for the key messages of Lime Solicitors, who are keen to encourage better education for younger generations about the importance of estate planning and inheritance to avoid fraught and emotionally challenging disputes in the future.
