For any students about to embark on their first career, here is some advice from our team to their younger selves.
This time ten years ago, I was a keen undergraduate excitedly applying for jobs while writing my dissertation at the University of Suffolk.
The ‘world was my oyster’ they’d say, but that’s a scary thought for someone who likes an organised calendar and a clear direction of what’s next. For the first time in my life, I didn’t know what was next…
It’s a situation faced by many young students, embarking on their first jobs in the big wide world after a lifetime of education: suddenly expected to find a job that justifies all that studying.
For me, it began when I first met PLMR Genesis in an Event Management lecture. I was introduced to public relations and had a go at creating a fun campaign for a client, it really encouraged my creativity and I realised I enjoyed the fast-paced and varied day that a PR agency could offer.
Two weeks after handing in my dissertation, I was sitting at my new desk as a PR Account Executive, and I’ve never looked back. While the desk may be different and the job title has changed, I’m still enjoying my career here at PLMR Genesis and can look back fondly on a decade in the industry. Time flies!
It’s not always a straightforward journey but, as a result of my own experience at university, I saw true value in meeting employers, gaining work experience and embedding myself in the local business community before I graduated. I could therefore practice my skills alongside my degree, which made all the difference (and confidence) when applying for jobs.
It’s something I still advocate for now, maintaining strong relations as a University of Suffolk alum.
By hosting practical workshops with university students, taking on students for work placements, and attending local careers fairs, the PLMR Genesis team is helping to raise the profile of PR and inspire the next generation of creative professionals.
We’re also highlighting the opportunities available on our doorstep – while the bright lights of London call to some, Suffolk is shining with its own versatile business landscape.
