Suffolk students explored an exciting range of creative career choices available to them across the region at #mediadiscovery 2017 – an interactive event hosted by Genesis PR, University of Suffolk and a wide range of local employers on Monday 27 February at the University’s Waterfront building.

Open to students aged 16 and above, the event featured a variety of hands-on sessions from exhibitors within the creative media industry. #mediadiscovery helped students to find out more about careers in PR, social or digital media, broadcasting, newspaper publishing, graphic design, photography, film production and more.

Exhibitors at the event included Genesis PR, East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star publisher Archant, Ipswich Community Radio, Trinity Park Events, Yellobelly, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, Sanctuary Personnel, Summer Isle Films, James Fletcher Photographer, Simple By Designs, Screen Suffolk and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR). University of Suffolk also showcased its range of degree programmes.

Leading Suffolk PR agency Genesis PR worked with the University of Suffolk to host #MediaDiscovery as part of the firm’s pro-bono community commitment. University of Suffolk Event Management student Emily Rowling joined Genesis PR on work placement for two months to help plan and organise the careers showcase alongside Genesis’ PR apprentice Ellie Brown. Both have gained valuable, first-hand experience of what it’s like to work in the PR industry.

Genesis PR director Penny Arbuthnot, said: “Thank you to the wide number of exhibitors who joined us at #mediadiscovery this year, and to the local schools and colleges for coming along. Ipswich and the wider county has so many careers opportunities available in the creative sector and we were delighted to show a taste of what’s on offer to students on their doorstep.”

Laura Locke, Senior Lecturer at the University of Suffolk’s Business School added: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Genesis PR and a range of employers to support the development of students and graduates across Suffolk and beyond. In the Business School and the wider University of Suffolk, our philosophy is to work closely with students and employers to develop career ready graduates. #mediadiscovery has been an exciting event and we have been very pleased to be involved.”
