Account Manager

PLMR is a successful, fast-growing communications agency with a dynamic, vibrant team that works across a number of high-profile clients to deliver public affairs, public relations and digital solutions.

As an Account Manager you will be a central member of the PLMR team providing high quality servicing to all our clients. You will have at least three years’ experience in dealing with local, trade, national and digital media; will be able to demonstrate your ability to develop relationships with journalists; and will have a proven aptitude for consultancy and management.

In this role you will progress your consultancy skills; overseeing the day to day management of client accounts and maintaining a positive client relationships; understanding the media landscape and identifying proactive and reactive press opportunities, including any potential reputational risks; monitoring political trends; and navigating issues which might impact client activity. You will also further develop your commercial and business skills, upselling to clients and support with new business proposals that meet organisations’ aims and objectives. In this role, you will manage relationships with both junior and senior colleagues, ensuring PLMR meets and exceeds client expectations at every level.

You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be well organised, highly motivated and able to work under your own initiative. As an account manager, you will be a team player with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to supervise, motivate and lead colleagues. You will have a proven ability to deliver on commitments, plan workloads, identify issues and find solutions. You will have your own networks within media circles which you will maintain and expand.

This role will sit within PLMR’s education practice, working on an array of clients within the sector, spanning multi-academy trusts and schools, edtech providers, education charities and associations as well as supporting corporate organisations and other businesses working within PLMR’s other sector areas, as required. While the role will predominantly focus on media relations (PR and reputation management), there will be opportunities for public affairs, stakeholder engagement and broader communications support.


Key career progression points:

  • You have been employed in the PR industry or held a communications role for a minimum of three years.
  • You have specific examples of how you have supported clients in an agency environment, or an if in-house – have a proven track record of juggling multiple deadlines and delivering successful projects.
  • You will have a strong track record of identifying or creating a news hook, resulting in relevant media coverage. You will also have an established network of media contacts, even if outside education.
  • You have developed excellent client relationships and have the ability to write persuasively and convey client messages accurately for different media and audiences. You have demonstrated that you can drive a client accounts and are a capable and competent consultant.
  • You have demonstrated that you are a skilled line manager – you have the ability to effectively manage colleagues to ensure client needs are met. You have a positive, professional relationship with colleagues and they look to you for advice and guidance.


Main responsibilities:

Client delivery

  • Provide leadership on accounts and act as a trusted point of contact for the client
  • Maintaining excellent client relationships – ensuring they feel well serviced and able to call for advice at any time
  • Maximising opportunities for account development at all times, identifying ways to upsell as well as deliver against clients’ aims and objectives
  • Managing live tasks and ensuring deadlines are consistently met, work is delivered to a high standard and is always accurate
  • Anticipating client demands and ensuring PLMR is always ‘adding value’
  • Working with senior colleagues to ensure that client accounts are run efficiently and to budget
  • Developing excellent relationships with client teams and wider stakeholders
  • Knowing what is happening on your accounts – what needs to be delivered, who needs to be contacted, what is coming up – and anticipating any issues or challenges
  • Delegating tasks to junior colleagues where appropriate and motivating them to deliver on these
  • Responding appropriately to crisis management issues
  • Drafting an array of communications, from press releases and articles to briefing notes, letters and ad copy and distributing to targeted media or audiences as required
  • Fostering and maintaining relationships with national and sectoral media, politicians, civil servants, local authorities, regulatory bodies, and any relevant interest groups
  • Ensuring that PLMR accurately monitors the media, including newspapers, magazines, journals, broadcasts, newswires, social media and blogs, to spot and secure timely opportunities for clients
  • Using social media and digital channels to manage clients’ key messaging and enhance the reputation of PLMR and its clients
  • Planning and managing client communications on digital channels and through video (where required or alongside our digital team), with the ability to explain and sell our digital services to clients
  • Supporting event management (when appropriate), including press conferences and promotional events
  • Attending and promoting client events to the media
  • Developing and maintaining an expertise in client sectors and related policy fields
  • Responding to requests for information from clients which may be at short notice
  • Researching, forecasting and evaluating the effects of public policy on an organisation, using public sources, political intelligence and personal contacts
  • Attending select committee hearings, party conferences and other networking events on behalf of PLMR
  • Writing and placing articles on behalf of PLMR in key media for the company’s profile and positioning
  • Providing regular copy for the PLMR website – blogging, case studies, features, comment as well as supporting with wider marketing initiatives
  • Reviewing all written material for internal and external purposes


PLMR growth

  • Supporting senior colleagues with new business opportunities, including providing background research, participating in new business calls and leading on proposal development – thereby assisting in the growth of the PLMR business and the achievement of its business plan
  • Attending events, seminars, and conferences, and setting up regular meetings with contacts to promote a positive, professional image of PLMR as a market leader and obvious point of call for our services
  • Networking with potential new business leads
  • Developing existing client accounts to increase retainers
  • Providing updates on new business leads regularly to other senior colleagues
  • Relationship building and networking with colleagues, clients and the media
  • Promoting PLMR externally



  • Supporting colleagues with task requests and helping the team successfully achieving its targets
  • Completing accurate daily timesheets
  • Providing information for invoicing and cost recharging to the finance department in a timely manner as requested
  • Developing a positive professional relationship with PLMR colleagues, and contributing to a thriving day to day working environment
  • Effectively managing and delegating tasks to junior colleagues and assisting them as necessary
  • Ensuring PLMR staff resources are fully utilised
  • Mentoring junior colleagues, if required, in order to develop their consultancy skills

Skills / attributes required

  • Educated to degree standard or with at least three years’ relevant experience in an agency or in-house communications setting
  • Experience of managing PR and public affairs projects, liaising with journalists and securing press opportunities in national, trade and regional and local media outlets
  • Expertise in strategic digital communications
  • A strong knowledge of national and sectoral media, current events, and political systems
  • Proven ability to research and gather information from a range of sources, identify key issues relevant to clients, generate original ideas and solutions into concise, crisp but analytically rich results which can be pitched to media and/or political stakeholders
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills with the ability to conceptualise, analyse and write persuasive arguments, particularly for media
  • Proven editing and proofreading ability, including drafting and editing documentation to produce accurate and error free final copy after minimum iterations
  • Proven ability to manage relationships with a range of stakeholders
  • Ability to supervise, motivate and manage junior colleagues
  • Proven ability to understand, manage and respond in a timely and proactive manner to emerging crisis communications issues for clients
  • Desirable experience of working with sector specialists and/or media lawyers
